Wedding Music

Friday, November 14th, 2008

These days, nearly anything can count as wedding music – for walking down the aisle and also for the first dance.  If you want something more exciting than the wedding march, what else can you go for?

Pop songs for the first dance are common, especially if the song has resonance for the couple.  General choices could be anything from the obvious love songs from Whitney Houston to Frank Sinatra; a lot of this depends on the age of the Bride and Groom!  It’s always better to avoid anything too contentious, even if you did fall in love listening to The Birdie Song.

Remember you want something that you can walk comfortably down the aisle with; a song or piece of music with a rhythm that is neither too slow nor too fast so you can pace yourself.  It’s better to have a piece of music rather than a song for walking down the aisle – you don’t want to be singing along as you approach the groom!

A popular choice these days is to hire a wedding band – this could be strings for a classical feel, or a brass band or a jazz quartet for a swing 50s feel.  The band will normally have a repertoire but will also be happy to play songs at request (so long as you give them some notice so they can practise!).  These will work better at bigger weddings and can cost more than hiring a DJ or just playing a CD for the day!  You can always ask a friend to be in charge of the music player.

For the first dance, if you are a keen dancer you can always choose a piece of music you can dance too – for example the waltz or foxtrot so long as you have both practiced!

And who can forget the couple who danced to thriller at their wedding?  Since then there have been lots of copycats; people who do a full rehearsed dance and incorporate something funky and different into their routine.  This can be the bride and her friends or the groom or the ushers.  It takes work to rehearse a full routine but imagine the surprise on your friend’s faces when they see your special dance!  Ideas include Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the dance from Dirty Dancing…and what is your favourite film?  Perhaps you can get ideas from there?
