5 Quick Wedding Budget Tips

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

1. Do not mention the “W’ word if you can avoid it. As soon as you mention to a vendor or supplier that you are having a wedding, this is often a green light for them to hike up the price, because everyone expects wedding to be expensive. If you can, say you are having a “family get together”

2. Make a list of the elements that go into your dream wedding (including honeymoon) and prioritize them. Do the important things first and allocate cash to the things higher up on your list.

3. Purchase shoes, accessories, undergarments, etc. that you can use for work after the wedding.

4. Borrow or make as many items as you possibly can! Some items that can be acquired from a friend or relative include: the cake knife and serving set, toasting glasses, jewellery and the bride’s shoes.

5. Make as many items as you possibly can! You can make many items yourself and enlist a few friends to help you tie ribbons and pew bows, to make your veil/headpiece, order of service programmes, wedding favours, bridesmaids’ dresses etc.

Rubbish American Wedding eBooks

Monday, September 1st, 2008

We have a special download for you today. But please read ALL of this post before you download it (the link is at the bottom of the post)… otherwise it might get a bit confusing :)

You know, we’re not professional wedding planners or anything, but we’ve just got married and been through the whole experience. We know what’s it like to organize a wedding and we also know what it’s like to deal with wedding suppliers and vendors.

With the benefit of experience, hindsight and a little further research, we’re now in a position to help YOU avoid some of the pitfalls so you can reduce the cost of your wedding without compromising on quality by employing the wedding budget strategies we have discovered.

We’re sensitive to the fact that people are in different positions with respect to the size of their budget, the size of their family etc. And we’re not looking to say do this, do that, don’t do this. We’re looking to outline winning STRATEGIES that anyone can employ to save money / maximize the budget without compromising on quality.

We’re definitely not talking about the stuff you get in some of these rubbish American eBooks you see that say they that say they can save you thousands of dollars… yes that’s right dollars! Most of the save-money-on-your-wedding stuff that we came across while planning our wedding (and we bought and read them all) was American.

In the UK, we don’t tend to do rehearsal dinners or out-of-towner dinners or themed wedding or any of that kind of stuff. And we also don’t have the luxury of being able to get married anywhere we want to (which is a key tip in these books that simply does not apply in the UK). So things are just different in the UK. These American books are also crammed full of useless padding like “make sure to put plenty of ice cubes in drinks to save on the amount of beverage you need for a full glass” – no-one we know of is ever actually going to do that!

To prove our point, we’re going to give you - FOR FREE - one of the American cost-saving eBooks we’re talking about. We actually bought the distribution rights to one of these books simply so that we could give it away to you… just so you can see for yourself that they are largely irrelevant for people in the UK and so you don’t waste your money on them (we’ve seen this very same book selling for close to $40).

Wedding Video: this is just too funny…

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

OK, so we’ve recently been setting up a YouTube account so we can easily share some video with you in the not-too-distant future on some more “serious” stuff like saving a shed-load of cash on your wedding without having to make compromises…

While browsing YouTube, we came across some funny stuff - and you’ve got to laugh every now and again :)

Anyway check this out… (note: it starts slow, but stick with it and at about 40 seconds in, you may well be surprised at what you see)

This is a perfect example of two people who knew exactly how they wanted to celebrate their day and they did it their way. They didn’t get bogged down in etiquette or protocol - they did what they wanted to do and it clearly made them happy.

Cheers,

Martin & Karen

How important is it really? No REALLY!?

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

OK, so here is the VIDEO that we recorded.

We recorded it anyway, even though Kaz had a bit of a bunged-up nose! Press play below to get started (you might need to be a lttle bit patient while it loads):

In the interview, we talk about our wedding “cakes”. Here is the one with the individual chocolate pots that doubled up as dessert (total cost £450, but we saved ~£5 per head on dessert):

Chocolate Wedding Cake

And here is my choice - the infamous wedding cake made from cheese :) - we used this to feed those who were still hungry in the evening (with some crackers and Yorkshire pork pies). Total cost £175. But the alternative suggested by our caterers was a ~£5 - £10 per head finger buffet!).
